From infrastructure projects to multi-family housing projects to new community attractions like Terra Park, the City of Johnston has seen a lot of exciting changes in the past few years. In fact, “progress” seemed to be the theme of 2018 as residents were able to see many projects end and others move forward. One of the more noteworthy achievements in progressing economic development in Johnston is the approval of the Birchwood Business Park and road extension project, which has been in the works for more than 20 years. The project will bring office, industrial and residential opportunities to the South Central section of the community.

Additionally, the recently opened interchange at NW 100th Street provides new access to the Southwest corner of the community, which will support continued development activity in West Park. Another important step forward for the city is the annexation of over 1,400 acres of land along Saylorville Drive and east of Highway 141 in Northwest Johnston. Although it remains to be seen how the area will begin to take shape, this will dramatically transform Johnston long-term.

Looking forward to 2019, the city doesn’t seem to be slowing down. As new market rate multi-family facilities like Brio of Johnston, Vintage Cooperatives and Brick Towne near completion, Johnston is poised to see more residential growth. The City of Johnston has shifted focus to the Town Center project to fulfill current residents’ desire for a community gathering space as well as the desire for more restaurants and retail. Once completed, the Town Center project will not only will this serve the current residential population, but also attract and serve the business community.
